Candles flickered in the rain as a dozen students gathered in front of the statehouse to commemorate AIDS victims across the globe.
The candlelight vigil was one of the events held by Emerson’s Communication, Politics, and Law Association (CPLA) in light of World AIDS Day Dec. 1.
“Pizza and Politics” took place before the vigil, where more than 50 students crowded into a room to listen to fellow students and professors share personal stories of their accounts with AIDS, and CPLA’s involvement with World AIDS Day in the past, present and future.
Alex Castillo, CPLA vice president, said the purpose for the event was to continue spreading awareness about HIV/AIDS, especially because President Obama released an HIV/AIDS strategy on July 2010 emphasizing that our work is not yet done.
“This epidemic isn’t only affecting our friends and family,” Castillo said. “It’s a global issue.”
John Anderson, an associate professor for communication studies at Emerson, said AIDS was his rite of passage, the same way World War I was for his parents.

“It’s important to testify and reflect on the kinds of changes AIDS has made in the world and in personal lives,” Anderson said.
Gregory Payne, CPLA advisor and communication studies professor at Emerson, said CPLA has been a very important part in raising awareness about AIDS in Boston.
In 1991, Emerson students filmed and starred in the first AIDS docudrama called “In The Shadow of Love.” In 2005, Will Sagar, then a sophomore print journalism student, wrote a rap song titled “Be Prepared” highlighting the importance of practicing safe sex. The song was later picked up by UNICEF and used to spread AIDS awareness.
“This is what Emerson is all about,” Payne said. “It’s about trying to illuminate the ignorance.”
